We love Jagerschnitzel - which is Schnitzel topped with a mushroom gravy, called Jager Sauce or Hunter Sauce. German food is one of our favorites and this is just pure comfort food when paired with Spaetzle (German pasta) and Schnitzel (breaded pork or chicken). This gravy is easy to throw together and is also delicious on mashed potatoes too. Take your schnitzel to a whole other level and top it with this Jager Sauce! And make it Jagerschnitzle!
Jager Sauce - German Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients:
Butter
Package of mushrooms, sliced
Garlic clove, minced
Salt and pepper to taste
Flour
Sherry or Port Wine (optional)
Beef stock
Add a couple of tablespoons of butter to the skillet and cook the mushrooms until soft.
Add the garlic and sauté for 45 seconds.
Sprinkle of a few tablespoons of flour, so that the mushrooms are covered with a light dusting.
Stir the mushrooms and flour for about 3 minutes. Adding more butter if needed. You want to cook off the flour taste.
Add a good splash of sherry and cook until it is reduced.
Slowly whisk in the beef stock, little by little. Constantly stirring until it is to your referred consistency.
Serve warm over Schnitzel, Spaetzle or mashed potatoes. Please see the cecuoe below...
