Mint Julep - a classic Kentucky Derby Cocktail

April 30, 2021

Tomorrow is the 147th Kentucky Derby! Before this virus came along last year, friends of ours would host the most amazing Kentucky Derby party every year! The ladies would wear spring dresses with their Derby hats and the men would sport bow ties, as we placed our bets.

One of the best parts of the party was the amazing food and the Mint Julep cocktails that they would serve! I love this bourbon based cocktail but I only drink it on the day of the Kentucky Derby. I wanted to share this as my "Friday Night Cocktail" so that you can make it for tomorrow's race. Will you be watching?

Mint Julep Cocktail

Ingredients: 8 mint leaves 1 tsp powdered sugar 1 tsp club soda 2 to 3 oz. Bourbon Crushed ice 1 oz. Club soda Fresh mint to garnish

  1. Muddle together 8 mint leaves, the powdered sugar and 1 tsp of club soda with a spoon in a rocks glass. Or if you are lucky enough to have a silver Mint Julep cup, use that!

  2. Fill the glass 3/4 full with crushed ice.

  3. Add the bourbon and top off with 1 ounce of club soda.

  4. Stir, garnish with more fresh mint and enjoy right away.

If you prefer a sweeter Mint Julep, muddle together 2 teaspoons of powdered sugar with 2 teaspoons of club soda. You can also substitute simple syrup.

Cheers! I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and have fun watching the Kentucky Derby!
