Septmber 5, 2020
Like everything else in 2020, the 146th Kentucky Derby is different this year. It was supposed to be held back on May 2nd but was rescheduled to today because of the pandemic. And this year there will be no live spectators at the race either.
Every year, our good friends host the most amazing Kentucky Derby party! It is our favorite party of the year! It is so fun to gather together with good friends, get dressed up in our festive Derby hats and enjoy some amazing southern food and cocktails. I am missing this annual party with friends but am thinking about all of the fun and fond times that we shared at those parties.
It is time to keep a key part of the Kentucky Derby tradition alive and make a Mint Julep. Usually I make it with simple syrup but I didn't have the time today. So here is a quick way to make a Mint Julep for tonight's race. Cheers!
Mint Julep Cocktail
Ingredients:
8 mint leaves
1 tsp powdered sugar
1 tsp club soda
2 to 3 oz. Bourbon
Crushed ice
1 oz. Club soda
Fresh mint to garnish
Muddle together 8 mint leaves, the powdered sugar and 1 tsp of club soda with a spoon in a rocks glass. Or if you are lucky enough to have a silver Mint Julep cup, use that!
Fill the glass 3/4 full with crushed ice.
Add the bourbon and top off with 1 ounce of club soda.
Stir, garnish with more fresh mint and enjoy right away.
If you prefer a sweeter Mint Julep, muddle together 2 teaspoons of powdered sugar with 2 teaspoons of club soda.
Enjoy those Mint Juleps tonight! Cheers to a fun race and a long holiday weekend! Hoping to be able to celebrate the 147th Kentucky Derby with our friends next spring!
