I am so thankful that we were able to stop at Primanti Bros. for lunch while we were in Pittsburgh! I grew up in Pittsburgh and this is one of my favorite sandwiches!!
It's such a unique one. That's for sure! Hot lunch meat, melted Provolone cheese, a simple vinegar based coleslaw, hot French fries and tomato slices are sandwiched in between two soft slices of Italian bread. It's delicious with hot sauce too!
Trust me, this unique combination makes the best sandwich!! One that everyone who travels to Pittsburgh must try! Here is how you can make it at home...
Pittsburgh's Primanti Bros. Sandwich
Ingredients:
French fries, cooked according to directions (a boardwalk style fry is best)
Fresh loaf of Italian bread
Your choice (or combo) of capicola ham or pastrami
Provolone cheese
Vinegar based coleslaw(see recipe below)
Tomato, sliced
Optional: Hot sauce(I highly recommend trying it with hot sauce)
Cut bread into thick slices and set aside.
Spray a nonstick skillet with cooking spray.
Warm up the lunch meat in the skillet cooking it on medium for about two minutes on one side.
Flip the lunch meat and place a slice of Provolone on top. Cover and lower the heat to low. Cook until the cheese melts.
Place the warm lunch meat and cheese on a slice of Italian bread.
Place the cooked french fries on top of the meat and cheese.
Then add a layer of coleslaw, some tomato slices and top with another piece of Italian bread. Sprinkle on some hot sauce if you desire. I love it that way!
Copycat Primanti Bros. Coleslaw Recipe
Ingredients:
1 (10 oz.) bag of shredded cabbage
3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
3 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 tsp Jane's Krazy Mixed-Up Salt
A bit of fresh cracked pepper
In a bowl, whisk together the apple cider vinegar and the sugar, until the sugar dissolves.
Add the oil, Jane's Krazy Mixed-Up salt and fresh cracked pepper to the bowl. Whisk together until it turns into a smooth viniagrette.
Add the bag of cabbage to the bowl and toss well.
Cover and let this coleslaw sit for at least a few hours (or overnight) before making the sandwiches.
The simplicity of this coleslaw adds the perfect flavor to a Primanti Bros. sandwich. And the cool and crunchy texture of the coleslaw is amazing with the warm lunch meat, cheese and French fries, all on soft Italian bread!
Try this sandwich for a taste of Pittsburgh at home! You will love it!!
