Texas Trash - Homemade Chex Mix

December 5, 2023

This delicious snack is a holiday family tradition of ours! And it is one that we all look forward to ALL year long!

My mother grew up in Texas and my grandma used to make this Chex mix back then. Only they called it "Texas Trash". My grandma would only make this yummy treat from Thanksgiving to Christmas and my mom followed her tradition as well. I am now the third generation making this only during the holidays but now we simply call it "trash".

It is the best ever! You cannot even compare it to store bought Chex Mix as this is SO much better!! It has a perfect spice to it and it tastes absolutely amazing warm and fresh out of the oven. I love this holiday tradition of "Texas Trash". And you will too!

Texas Trash - Homemade Chex Mix

Ingredients:

1/2 box Wheat Chex

1/2 box Rice Chex

1/2 box Corn Chex

3/4 can cocktail peanuts

1 bag pretzel sticks

1 1/2 sticks butter, melted

1/2 of a 5 oz. bottle of a Worchestershire sauce

Garlic salt to taste

Brown paper bag

  1. Layer the three Chex cereals, pretzel sticks and peanuts onto two sheet pans.

  2. Mix together the Worchestershire sauce and melted butter.

  3. Spoon this mixture evenly over both of the sheet pans and sprinkle with garlic salt.

  4. Toss this mixture on both pans and sprinkle with some more garlic salt.

  5. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes and taste. Add more garlic salt if needed.

  6. After one hour, take the sheet pans out of the oven.

  7. Take the brown paper bag and rip it open and lay it out flat onto your counter.

  8. Pour the Texas Trash onto the brown paper bag into a single layer and allow to cool.

  9. Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag

Although it tastes the best warm so get a bowl and fill it up. So yummy!

It is ready to go into the oven!

And fresh out of the oven...

It's a perfect snack or appetizer to have on hand this time of the year!

There is something really special about holiday traditions. This delicious treat is one the we look forward to all year long!! And you will too!
