Homemade Spaetzle - German Pasta for an Oktoberfest Dinner

October 16, 2021

Let the Oktoberfest dinner continue!

German Spaetzle...I must admit that I do not know the proper way to pronounce it but I DO know that it is my family's most favorite comfort food.

You might be wondering...what is Spaetzel? It is a German pasta that is a cross between pasta, an egg noodle and a dumpling, with a hint of nutmeg to it. After you boil the Spaetzle, you pan fry it in butter so that it becomes nice and golden. The taste and texture is like no other and my family gets so excited when they see that I am making it!

Homemade German Spaetzle - Oktoberfest Dinner

(My family of 5 doubles this recipe)

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp nutmeg

2 eggs, beaten

1/4 cup milk

  1. Start boiling a large pot of water.

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg.

  3. Make a "well" in the middle and add eggs and milk.

  4. Stir. Pulling from the walls of the well with each stir.

  5. Keep stirring and pulling from the wall until it is combined.

  6. Let the Spaetzle dough rest for 15 minutes.

  7. Using a Spaetzle maker or slotted spoon, take a cup of dough and run it back and forth over the water until all dough is boiling.

  8. Stir and let the Spaetzle boil for 3-4 minutes.

  9. Remove cooked Spaetzle with a strainer and repeat until all dough is cooked.

  10. Right before dinner, melt some butter in a skillet and cook the Spaetzle until golden brown. You can also add some Parmesan if you would like or top it with some delicious Jager Sauce.

For a complete German Oktoberfest meal, serve the Spaetzle with Schnitzel and Jager Sauce! Please find the recipes below...
